As usual, Fedor Emelianenko will have to slay a giant.
Hoping to return to the win column after his first loss in nearly a decade, the legendary Russian will be outweighed by well over 30 pounds when he gets in the cage to face Antonio Silva at Saturday night's Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva event.
Silva weighed in at 264 pounds while Emelianenko checked in at 230 for their main event matchup at the weigh-ins, held at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Emelianenko (32-2, 1 no contest) has apparently suffered no loss of popularity from his recent defeat, getting the loudest reception from the assembled crowd before bowing to them.
The massive Silva, a 6-foot-4 Brazilian, is 15-2 in his career after victories over Andrei Arlovski and Mike Kyle.
In the co-main event, Sergei Kharitonov, fighting in the U.S. for the first time since 2007, weighed in at 250 pounds for his bout with Arlovski.
The former UFC champ Arlovski will be attempting to snap his three-fight losing streak, while Kharitonov fought just once in 2010, with a first-round knockout on New Year's Eve in Japan.
In the fight to determine the No. 1 alternate for the tournament, Shane Del Rosario outweighed Lavar Johnson, 248-243.
The proceedings were fairly brief and uneventful, but one of the few light-hearted moments saw Grand Prix reserve fighter Gian Villante putting fake sideburns on his face for his faceoff photo with Chad Griggs, who is notorious for his mutton-chop sideburns.
