Fedor Emelianenko, M-1 Confirm Planned Fall Contest In Russia

For the first time since 2007, former Pride Heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (31-4) is slated to fight inside his homeland. Emelianenko's manager and M-1 Global co-founder Vadim Finkelstein announced the news over the weekend.

"Fedor is going to fight in late fall in Russia, we have already reached all the necessary agreements on his fight," Finkelstein wrote on M-1 Global's official website.

No specific opponent, date, or venue has been decided upon at this time.

The bout will mark the first appearance for the 34-year-old since losing in the first round of a Strikeforce contest against Dan Henderson in July. The setback capped an abrupt three-fight losing streak that resulted in the Russian's release from the promotion.

In the immediate aftermath of the loss, many speculated that Emelianenko would retire from the sport of mixed martial arts. However, after a brief period of reflection the idea was quickly put to rest by the fighter's management team.

"We consulted with Fedor and it was decided that he should not leave the sport in this way." Finkelstein stated at the time. "His friends and past opponents support Fedor in continuing his career and he agreed."

Emelianenko last fought inside Russia four years ago, defeating Matt Lindland via first-round armbar in the headlining fight of ‘BodogFIGHT: Clash of the Nations.‘
