Shane Carwin told The Fight Fix that his agent has been in contact with Fedor Emelianenko's agent in regards to the two heavyweight mixed martial artists training together.
The seed to train with Fedor was planted by a comment Fedor made when questioned about his training for the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament: "I wouldn’t mind training somewhere else and with someone like Shane Carwin, who is a good fighter."
Fedor's comment made it back to Carwin, who responded on The Underground Forum, "I would be honoured to train with Fedor. After seeing his CBS special, I was impressed with the isolation and hardcore and yet raw training I saw."
Since those comments were made earlier in January, Carwin has stepped up his pursuit of a training camp with Fedor.
“There has been a little contact between our agents and stuff. I was the one that opened up the invitation first, because it would be an honour to train with a legend like Fedor,” Carwin told The Fight Fix.
“I think the world of him—he is a family man and a man of God, he has great values and beyond that he is just a great fighter. Hopefully we can get it done.”
Carwin has not fought since July of 2010 when he lost to Brock Lesnar. He was scheduled to fight Roy Nelson on January 1, but had to withdraw due to a back injury that required surgery.
Carwin has recovered from the surgery and is scheduled to return to the Octagon at UFC 131, which is scheduled for June 11 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
No opponent has been named for Carwin at this time.
